The company is seeking applications from eligible candidates for the position of CIVIL/WATER ENGINEER. In particular Rural Focus is seeking engineers competent in water supply design to support an expanding portfolio related to community based water supply projects.

The candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • BSc in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering or Agricultural Engineering from a recognised university (minimum upper second);
  • At least 5 years proven professional experience in the design and construction of water supply projects;
  • MSc preferable;
  • Registration with ERB preferable.

Candidate should be a team player, output based, and willing to undertake fieldwork in any part of Kenya.

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR GRADUATE ENGINEER

1.1 Survey Work

The Engineer is expected to be able to undertake survey work for:

  • Topographical surveys;
  • Setting out;
  • Levelling.

In undertaking survey work the Engineer is expected to set out proper beacons at appropriate spacing. The Engineer is expected to be able to competently handle a GPS, dumpy level, a total station. The Engineer is required to maintain an accurate record of all notes and calculations related to the surveys undertaken.

1.2 Feasibility Work

The Engineer is expected to be able to carry out a feasibility study and prepare a comprehensive report which includes:

  • Legal aspects;
  • Hydrological and water resource analysis;
  • Environmental considerations;
  • Social aspects;
  • Technical aspects;
  • Economic analysis;
  • Project financing.

1.3 Design Work

The Engineer is expected to be able to undertake design work for:

  • Gravity and piped water projects including pipeline and open channel flow;
  • Water treatment;
  • Sewerage and effluent treatment, including constructed wetlands;
  • Rockfill, earth and concrete dams including offtake works;
  • Pans;
  • Rainwater harvesting system;
  • Rural roads.

In performing design work, the engineer is expected to:

 

 

  • Maintain an accurate record of all notes and calculations;
  • Ensure that all calculations are properly cross checked and signed off by a senior engineer;
  • Prepare a comprehensive design report which sets out all criteria, assumptions, calculations, and results;
  • Prepare costed bills of quantities;
  • Prepare construction plan;
  • Prepare cash flow requirements for construction project.

The Engineer is expected to be able to handle various software for engineering design and analysis. In addition to MS-Excel, the software is likely to include packages that cover:

  • Reservoir simulation;
  • Crop modelling;
  • Pipe networks;
  • Irrigation applications;
  • Cut and Fill volumes;
  • Slope stability;
  • Reinforced concrete design;
  • Open channel flow.

1.4 Drafting Work

The Engineer is expected to be able to undertake drafting work using a CAD environment, with resultant maps, plans and drawings to scale and finished properly with notes and headings. All design drawings must be checked and signed off by the appropriate work supervisor.

The Engineer is expected to have a basic understanding of GIS software and be able to manipulate digital maps.

1.5 Tendering

The Engineer is expected to be able to prepare tender documents and manage the tendering process including:

  • Preparation of tender documents according to FIDIC or other conditions of contract;
  • Advertise works;
  • Evaluate tenders and prepare tender evaluation report;
  • Negotiate contracts;

1.6 Construction Supervision

The Engineer is expected to be able to undertake construction supervision activities involving:

  • Scheduling sites tasks;
  • Ascertaining the quality of materials and workmanship;
  • Setting out and confirming levels and measurements;
  • Providing and documenting instructions to the contractor;
  • Ensuring contractor follows the design;
  • Preparing certificates for payment;
  • Handling site querries;
  • Maintaining all site records such as a diary, instructions to the contractor, correspondence related to the project, minutes of site meetings, climate, visitors, materials delivered, etc;
  • Ensuring that the Conditions of Contract are followed;
  • Maintaining communication between the client, the contractor and the resident engineer;

1.7 Field Work

The Engineer is expected to be able to prepare for and implement any field work that may be required. In preparing for field work, the Engineer is expected to:

  • Prepare a budget at least one week in advance indicating cash requirements and payment arrangements;
  • Book transport and equipment and ensure these are available for the fieldwork;
  • Ensure that any support staff or drivers are aware of the fieldwork;
  • Ensure the field work is properly sanction by the project supervisor;
  • Provide proper documentation of activities;
  • Liaise with client, community, government offices and provincial administration as may be required;
  • Acquire and manage photographs, field notes, documents and other materials as may be necessary for the assignment;

1.8 Training

The Engineer is expected to be able to prepare and implement a training program which may involve a training needs assessment, identification of trainees, preparation of training curriculum and materials, implementation of the training according to the agreed curriculum and methodologies.

1.9 Expenses and Accounting

The Engineer is expected to keep a proper and accurate record of all impresses, expenses and other work related costs. The Engineer is expected to surrender any impress at the earliest practical opportunity and certainly no later than the end of the month after the work for which the impress was taken has been completed.

1.10 Timesheets

The Engineer is required to maintain a daily record of all activities and work undertaken and to submit an accurate timesheet at the end of each month with proper details of time spent on each project.

1.11 Written Reports

The Engineer is expected to be able to prepare and finalise written reports to an acceptable standard, written logically, with correct grammar and spelling, with supporting details appropriately indicated in Appendices. All reports should be submitted for quality assurance to the supervising staff. 

All reports should be prepared in MS-Word compatible with current level in use at Rural Focus offices.

1.12 Presentations

The Engineer is expected to be able to prepare a presentation of any assignment and to deliver the presentation to an audience in a logical, audible and entertaining manner appropriate to the audience.

1.13 Reporting

The Engineer is expected to report to the staff member in charge of each assignment, or to a director if the staff member is not available.

1.14 Continuing Professional Development

The Engineer is expected to register with the Engineers Registration Board and the Institute of Engineers of Kenya and to take the necessary steps to plan for and accomplish a minimum of 10 hours per year related to continuing professional development. The Engineer is expected to present an annual report documenting the activities and value of the activities undertaken.

1.15 Other Tasks

The Engineer is expected to undertake other tasks as may be required from time to time as directed by a Director.
